Outer Space

Sep 12, 2013 | nature & awe

It was a CNN “breaking news” email, one of many that arrives each day to alert me to something (typically bad) taking place somewhere in the world. But this time when I clicked, there was this quiet little news story.

The Voyager 1 probe has become the first man-made object to enter interstellar space, NASA announced today.

Scientists report they have strong evidence that the unmanned spacecraft has crossed the magnetic boundary separating our solar system’s sun, planets and solar wind from the rest of the galaxy. The announcement comes more than 36 years after the unmanned spacecraft lifted off on a journey that gave humans close-up views of Jupiter and Saturn before heading toward deep space.

WE’VE JUST CROSSED OUT OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM—and there’s so much hitting my email inbox I could easily have clicked right past the news to get to the 10% Off at Michael’s that followed it.

It’s a crazy, information-bombing world we live in.

And we just crossed out of our solar system.

Think of that.
