THE APPALACHIAN WRITERS' WORKSHOP has come and gone, and it was a beautiful reminder of the immeasurable value of community. And commune we did, from the sharing of tiny bedrooms with stacked bunkbeds to "open concept" bathrooms with less privacy than a college freshman dorm. But also in the dining hall, with open seating (want a moment with a famous novelist? Poet? Memoirist? Go sit beside them!) and in the kitchen where attendees and faculty alike shared dishwashing duties. And in class, and on porches, and in afternoon participant readings, where the sense of "I know how scary this is, and I am here for you" is palpable. It's one of the many great gifts of a week at Hindman Settlement School, and I am wildly grateful.

Whatever you are doing, whatever your hopes or fears or work or dreams or challenges--find your community. Get support. Give support. It matters so much to hear someone cheer as day by day, word by word, step by difficult step you make your way there. Wherever there is. XXOO, Cathy

We're headed for a Maine vacation and I plan to eat lobster three times a day. And that's not including snacks. When I get home I think I'll be happy I found this lighter, make-it-at-home version of the classic Lobster Roll, from Skinnytaste.

BOOK LOVE
"All over the country, there are words disappearing from children's lives. These are the words of the natural world: Dandelion, Otter, Bramble and Acorn, all gone. The rich landscape of wild imagination and wild play is rapidly fading from our children's minds." Get two--one for you, one for a child you love.
