The Daily Grace
Hey there, friend,

I do not typically promote books via Amazon—as a writer, it's so important that I do what I can to support indie bookstores. But I am making an exception today. As luck would have it, my two latest 5-Star Reads (which I happened to add to my Favorite Books of All Times list just this morning) are both available for $2.99 on Kindle. I mean!!!

First let me introduce Miss Benson's Beetle. You cannot go wrong with Rachel Joyce, who is one of my favorite authors. You guys. I loved this novel so much. Here's the promo copy, to help you decide if it might be right for you:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A beautifully written, extraordinary quest in which two ordinary, overlooked women embark on an unlikely scientific expedition to the South Seas.”—Helen Simonson, author of Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand

She’s going too far to go it alone.

It is 1950. London is still reeling from World War II, and Margery Benson, a schoolteacher and spinster, is trying to get through life, surviving on scraps. One day, she reaches her breaking point, abandoning her job and small existence to set out on an expedition to the other side of the world in search of her childhood obsession: an insect that may or may not exist—the golden beetle of New Caledonia. When she advertises for an assistant to accompany her, the woman she ends up with is the last person she had in mind. Fun-loving Enid Pretty in her tight-fitting pink suit and pom-pom sandals seems to attract trouble wherever she goes. But together these two British women find themselves drawn into a cross-ocean adventure that exceeds all expectations and delivers something neither of them expected to find: the transformative power of friendship.
I read Miss Benson's Beetle in paperback, which I highly recommend because it's glorious to have her sentences before you, or if you are a Kindle reader here is a link to the $2.99 deal.

YIPPIE!

A Town Called Solace was on my library holds list for a long time, and it finally delivered a week ago. I dove right in on audio, and OH MY GOODNESS did I also love this novel. It was fantastic on audio because the narrators are exceptional, but it would also be a wonderful read. I was checking some publishing details about the book this morning on Amazon and lo and behold if I didn't discover it is also just $2.99 right now on Kindle.

The promo copy offers:
LONGLISTED FOR THE 2021 BOOKER PRIZE

"I've been telling everyone I know about Mary Lawson . . . Each of her novels is just a marvel." —Anne Tyler

A Town Called Solace--the brilliant and emotionally radiant new novel from Mary Lawson, her first in nearly a decade--opens on a family in crisis: rebellious teenager Rose been missing for weeks with no word, and Rose's younger sister, the feisty and fierce Clara, keeps a daily vigil at the living-room window, hoping for her sibling's return.

Enter thirtyish Liam Kane, newly divorced, newly unemployed, newly arrived in this small northern town, where he promptly moves into the house next door--watched suspiciously by astonished and dismayed Clara, whose elderly friend, Mrs. Orchard, owns that home. Around the time of Rose's disappearance, Mrs. Orchard was sent for a short stay in hospital, and Clara promised to keep an eye on the house and its remaining occupant, Mrs. Orchard's cat, Moses. As the novel unfolds, so does the mystery of what has transpired between Mrs Orchard and the newly arrived stranger.

Told through three distinct, compelling points of view--Clara's, Mrs. Orchard's, and Liam Kane's--the novel cuts back and forth among these unforgettable characters to uncover the layers of grief, remorse, and love that connect families, both the ones we're born into and the ones we choose. A Town Called Solace is a masterful, suspenseful and deeply humane novel by one of our great storytellers.
I read A Town Called Solace via audiobook from the library, and as I said, it was a wonderful listening experience. Or if you're interested in this deal, it's $2.99 right now on Kindle.
THANK YOU for letting me jump into your inbox. I got so excited I couldn't help myself! If you read either of these, do let me know what you think!
