For love of Posey.

May 20, 2024 | Moments of Grace | 49 comments

SHE CAME INTO the world the last day of April, tiny, beautiful, beloved. From that moment on, the earth has seemed to rotate on a different axis—her every newborn need the priority; the air and our hearts united in glorious awe and collective wonder. Sweet Posey! Precious Posey! Posey Catherine, namesake of both her great-grandmother and her grandmother (an overwhelming honor), and at once so very clearly, so very earnestly her own, most independent person.

She will not be a wallflower, this one.

I had been told the love you feel for a grandchild is different, in greater color somehow, than any other love. With my vast three weeks of experience, I think I can tell you why. It’s all the layers. There’s the joy and overwhelming gratitude for this glorious, miraculous new life. But over and under and within is woven the deep, wide, inexhaustible love for your own child, who’s now a mother herself. For her husband and partner. For this new family unit, new generation, new promise that life goes on, that lineage is real and that it matters and that each and every one of us is a link in a profound since-the-beginning-of-time chain.

Posey is my “next” just as my mother was to her grandmother, and me to mine, and Eliza to hers. I see them all, feel them all, hold them all even as I press this tiny newborn to my chest, as I listen to her breathe and wonder at the things that will fill her dreams or that, perhaps, fill them now. This beautiful little Posey who’s as yet unknown and still so known to me.

There is nothing like it, this unusual mix of proximity and distance, of immersion and broad perspective.

There is nothing—nothing—like the wideness of this love.
