Seeing Double

Apr 26, 2015 | birds & bears | 1 comment

I spent five days in Florida with my Dad, just returning this afternoon. When I got home I ran down the steps to the birdhouse to see what, if anything, has developed.

(You probably remember the most recent Bluebird Saga. They built a perfect nest, laid five eggs, then seem to have abandoned them without incubating. I am distraught!)

This is what I discovered.

all five eggs are gone

the five eggs are gone!

That means:

1. A snake has eaten the eggs.

2. The parents have removed the eggs.

3. The parents have built a new nest over the old eggs.

So I compared photos, old nest to new.

What do you think???

ps: Meg, I am off to buy mealworms!!!

They built over the old nest. A snake or raccoon ate the other eggs but the Mr. and missus want to live there. So they are still returning to the house. More eggs soon.
