When We Are 70

Jun 26, 2012 | travel & adventure | 4 comments

When we are 70, we are going to smoke and fly first class, he pronounced, as we sat under a canal-side canopy in the wildly romantic city of Venice.

I laughed out loud, giddy with excitement to have finally begun Day One of our Trip-Of-A-Lifetime. We were sipping cappuccinos and watching the tour group hordes parade past, although I must admit we were most interested in those couples who shared our cafe. It’s a game we play, my experienced traveler husband and I, trying to guess which are the Germans, the French, the Brits, the Italians.

I love this moment, he said, when the entire trip is still in front of us.

I smiled, deep and long and sweet.

It’s going to be so good, he said.

be still my heart

ready for the long flight to Venice

mesmerized by clouds, particularly when i am in the sky with them

See?

the Alps from my little Delta window

our first look at Venice, oh my

i think i shall be very happy here

So happy that the two of you were in the same country this time around! Looking forward to the rest of the story. Jim and I will meet you in first class in 20 years. Deal?

AND. In the meantime, we can practice traveling together with a little fly fishing excursion to Wyoming. Or wherever it is they do that kind of thing.

Oh to do it all again. That flight photo from Venice reminds me of this time last year for me! Who can tell from the air what a mysterious and wonderful place Venice can be!!

You know, I hadn’t thought “mysterious.” But it’s the PERFECT description of Venice. Perfect.
